Mom’s Flat Apple Pie

A classic, family-sized apple pie baked on a cookie sheet. The cornflake layer ensures a crisp crust, and the vanilla glaze adds the perfect sweet finish.

Ingredients

For the Crust:

  • 3 ¾ cups all-purpose flour

  • ¾ teaspoon salt

  • 1 ½ cups shortening

  • 1 large egg yolk

  • Enough milk to make 1 cup of liquid total (after adding the yolk)

For the Filling:

  • 2-3 handfuls (about 1 ½ cups) Corn Flakes cereal

  • 8-10 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 4-8 tablespoons cold butter, cubed

For the Egg Wash:

  • 1 large egg white

  • 1 teaspoon granulated sugar

For the Vanilla Glaze:

  • ⅔ cup powdered sugar

  • 2-3 dashes vanilla extract

  • Milk, as needed (about 1-2 tablespoons)
