Why Millions of Eggs Are Wasted Every Year
Every year, millions of eggs are thrown away simply because the expiration date has passed. However, eggs can last several weeks in the refrigerator, even beyond the printed date, as long as they are stored properly.
In the UK alone, 720 million eggs are wasted annually, often because people don’t know how to check their freshness.
How Long Do Eggs Really Last?
Supermarket eggs come with a recommended use-by date.
In France, stores must stop selling eggs 7 days before the expiration date.
Farm-fresh eggs don’t have labeled dates but are considered good up to 28 days after laying.
When stored properly, eggs can remain safe for up to 58 days after laying if the shell is intact.
Important: Never wash eggs you’re storing long-term—this removes their natural protective coating.
1. Smell the Egg
A spoiled egg gives off a distinct, unpleasant odor.
Crack the egg into a bowl and smell it.
If it smells off, discard it immediately.
If it smells fine, it’s safe to cook—but use it soon.
2. Check the Shell
