Activate the yeast:
In a small bowl, combine the warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and stir gently. Let sit for about 5-10 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy and bubbly. This means the yeast is activated and ready to go.
Mix the dough:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, softened butter, and egg.
Mix until the dough begins to come together. Then, knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 8β10 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook to knead for 5-7 minutes.
First rise:
Grease a clean bowl with olive oil and place the dough inside, turning it once to coat it with oil. Cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap.
Let it rise in a warm place for about 1β1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
Shape the buns:
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions (for standard-sized buns).
Roll each portion into a ball, then elongate the ball into an oval shape, about 4β5 inches long. Place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
Second rise:
Cover the shaped buns with a damp cloth and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes, or until they puff up and touch each other.
Preheat the oven:
While the buns are rising, preheat your oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C).
Bake the buns:
Before baking, brush the tops of the buns with a little milk for a soft, shiny finish.
Bake for 15β18 minutes, or until the buns are golden brown on top and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Cool and serve:
Allow the buns to cool slightly before slicing them. Serve with your favorite hot dogs, sausages, or fillings.
