Instructions:
Prepare the Milk Mixture: In a pan, gently heat the milk and butter until the butter melts. Set aside to cool until just warm.
Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the milk mixture and the beaten egg to the dry ingredients, mixing until a smooth dough forms.
Knead the Dough: Tip the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until elastic and shiny. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook.
First Proof: Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 30–45 minutes, or until doubled in size.
Shape the Buns: Punch down the dough and divide it into 9–12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a tight ball and place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
Second Proof: Cover the shaped buns with a cloth and let them rise for another 30–45 minutes until puffy.
Preheat Oven: Heat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan/gas 6).
Prepare for Baking: Gently press down on each bun, brush with a little milk, and sprinkle with sesame seeds if desired.
Bake: Bake for 10–12 minutes until the buns are risen and lightly golden. Allow them to cool completely before serving.
