It often happens, especially during house cleaning, that we come across the infamous silverfish. These insects prefer the damp, dark corners of our homes, which is why they are most commonly found in bathrooms, basements, or near bookcases.
Silverfish, or Lepisma saccharina, are small, silver-colored insects that move very quickly. While they are harmless to humans, they reproduce easily and can become a nuisance. Below are some simple and effective tricks to help you get rid of silverfish once and for all:
1. Use Lavender Oil
The scent of lavender is known to repel silverfish. Place a few drops of lavender essential oil in corners and areas where silverfish tend to appear. You can also use small sachets filled with dried lavender in these spots. For a stronger effect, add a few extra drops of essential oil to the sachets. Within a couple of days, you’ll likely notice a significant reduction in their presence.
2. DIY Silverfish Trap
You can easily make an effective silverfish trap at home. Pour some oat flakes into a glass jar, then wrap the outside of the jar with masking tape or duct tape. The starch in the oats attracts the insects. The tape allows them to climb in, but once inside, they won’t be able to climb back out due to the slippery glass surface.
3. Eliminate Nests with Ethyl Alcohol
