My Grandpa’s Trick: How to Unclog Shower Head Holes and Increase Water Pressure

Have you noticed your shower’s water pressure gradually getting weaker over time? Many people assume this is due to a plumbing issue in the entire house or apartment complex. However, in most cases, the culprit is much simpler — mineral buildup, particularly limescale, in the tiny holes of the shower head.

This common issue can drastically reduce water pressure as some holes become partially or fully clogged. Luckily, there’s a simple, budget-friendly trick that my grandpa taught me — and it really works.

Below, I’ll walk you through two easy methods to clean both fixed and removable shower heads using vinegar, a powerful natural descaler that dissolves mineral deposits effectively.

For a Fixed Shower Head

If your shower head is attached to the wall and can’t be easily removed, follow this method:

What You’ll Need:

  • A plastic bag (like a ziplock or produce bag)

  • White vinegar

  • A rubber band, string, or twist tie

  • An old toothbrush

Steps:

  1. Fill the plastic bag halfway with white vinegar.

  2. Carefully place the bag over the shower head so that the holes are fully submerged in the vinegar.

  3. Secure the bag using a rubber band or tie so it stays in place.

  4. Leave it to soak overnight (about 8–12 hours).

  5. The next morning, remove the bag and scrub the shower head gently with a toothbrush to remove loosened limescale.

  6. Turn on the water and let it run for a few minutes to flush out any remaining debris.

Why it works:
Vinegar contains acetic acid, which naturally breaks down mineral buildup without damaging metal finishes. It’s a safe, eco-friendly alternative to harsh chemicals.
