Refrigerators Might Be Inflating Your Electricity Bill

Refrigerators are essential appliances in every household, running 24/7 to keep food fresh and safe. However, many people are unaware that a small adjustment to the fridge’s settings—especially during colder months—can lead to significant energy savings.

Seasonal Setting Adjustments

Most refrigerators allow users to adjust the internal temperature using a scale, typically ranging from 1 to 5 or 1 to 6. During the summer, higher settings are necessary to counteract warmer ambient temperatures. But in winter, cooler room temperatures mean you can set the fridge to a lower setting (such as 1, 2, or 3) without compromising food safety. This simple change can reduce energy consumption considerably.

Likewise, setting the freezer to a slightly warmer (but still safe) temperature can help conserve electricity. Maintaining a freezer temperature around -18°C (0°F) is ideal for preserving food and preventing bacterial growth without excessive energy use.

Consider Storage Volume

The amount of food stored in your refrigerator also impacts its efficiency:

  • A lightly stocked fridge doesn’t need to work as hard, so a lower cooling level may be sufficient.

  • A fully stocked fridge, on the other hand, may require a slightly cooler setting to keep all items fresh and evenly cooled.
