Say Goodbye to Fruit Flies and Gnats for Good – The Paper Towel Trick Changes Everything
Here Are Some Easy DIY Traps to Try:
- Red Wine Trap: Fruit flies and gnats are attracted to the aroma of red wine. Mix 125ml (½ cup) of red wine with 375ml (1 ½ cups) of water in a bowl, and cover it with plastic wrap. Pierce small holes in the plastic wrap or create a paper towel cone. Leave the jar on your kitchen counter, where you see the most fruit flies. Change the mixture after a week or when it’s filled with dead flies. It may take about two weeks to eliminate all fruit flies since they lay eggs quickly.
- Apple Cider Vinegar Trap: This is one of the most popular and inexpensive ways to get rid of fruit flies. Heat 125ml (½ cup) of apple cider vinegar in the microwave or on the stove to enhance its potency. Add a few drops of dish soap and mix well. Pour this mixture into a trap and follow the same steps as the red wine trap. The vinegar attracts flies, and the soap kills them.
- Moldy Food Trap: Oddly enough, moldy food is what originally attracts these pests. Replace the liquids in your trap with spoiled food or overripe fruits and vegetables. Submerge the food in water once the trap becomes full of insects.
- Milk, Sugar, and Pepper Trap: Heat 500ml (2 cups) of milk in a saucepan, then add 8 tablespoons of white sugar and 4 tablespoons of black pepper. Let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes. Afterward, place the potion in a covered container, similar to the other traps. The sweet scent will attract flies, keeping them trapped inside.
- Lemon-Scented Spray: Mix 500ml (2 cups) of hot water with 10–15 drops of lemon oil in a clean spray bottle and use it on your kitchen surfaces. If the problem persists, mix 1000ml (4 cups) of hot water with 2 tablespoons of lemon-scented dish soap and spray it on infested plants.
Pro Tips:
- It takes more than a week – almost two – to completely eliminate fruit flies because they multiply quickly by laying eggs. To speed up the process, keep your kitchen, counters, and refrigerator clean at all times.
- Cleanliness is especially important during the warmer months when fruit flies and gnats are most active.
