A magic tablet transforms the gas grill into something shiny: the carbon deposits fall off in pieces.
First, you need a pan that fits the grill grate, fill it with water, and place it on the heat. Add two dishwasher tablets to the water. The water must come to a boil; then, place the grate in the pan and let it boil for about half an hour.
After removing the grate from the hot water, start cleaning it immediately; any tool at hand will work, such as a sponge or a brush.
The action of the hot water and the components of the tablet will soften the grease, making it easy to remove. Any stubborn carbon deposits can be scraped off with a knife.
This is how I clean half of the grate—then I flip it, place the dirty side in the pan, and repeat the entire process.
