Directions:

  1. Activate the yeast:
In a small bowl, mix the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. Make the dough:
In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil, and stir until a dough begins to form. If you like garlic flavor, add the garlic powder and herbs at this stage.

  3. Knead the dough:
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead it for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, but be careful not to add too much.

  4. First rise:
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

  5. Shape the bread sticks:
Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and roll it out into a rectangle (about 1/4-inch thick). Cut the dough into strips about 1/2 inch wide (you can use a sharp knife or pizza cutter for this).

  6. Shape the sticks:
Take each strip and twist it slightly for a fun, spiral effect. Place the bread sticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Make sure they’re not overcrowded, leaving a little space between each stick.

  7. Brush with olive oil:
Brush each bread stick with a little olive oil and sprinkle with coarse sea salt. If you want a cheesy flavor, you can sprinkle some freshly grated Parmesan cheese on top as well.

  8. Bake the bread sticks:
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the bread sticks for about 10-12 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy.

  9. Cool and enjoy:
Let the bread sticks cool for a few minutes, then serve them warm. They’re perfect for dipping in marinara sauce, olive tapenade, or even a cheesy dip!
