Morton’s Neuroma: That Sharp Pain in the Foot

Diagnosis

The diagnosis of Morton’s neuroma is based first on a physical examination and then on a series of tests, such as X-rays to rule out potential fractures, ultrasound, and MRI.

Treatment

Treatment depends on the severity of your symptoms. Your doctor will likely recommend trying conservative approaches first. You’ll likely be asked to change your shoes, using arch supports and metatarsal pads that fit inside the shoe and help reduce pressure on the nerve .

Another approach involves steroid injections into the painful area. If all else fails, surgery is recommended: pressure on the nerve can be relieved by cutting nearby structures, such as the ligament that connects some of the bones in the front of the foot. Alternatively, the nerve can be removed. While surgery is usually successful, the procedure can cause permanent numbness in the affected toes.
