At just five years old, Tommy Chan faced one of the most terrifying moments of his life. He had to undergo complex open-heart surgery to save his life. Bringing a dog into a patient’s room was uncommon, but the doctors and nurses knew how much Archie meant to Tommy, so they decided to make an exception. Soon after, the dog was there, next to his human friend.
Tommy hugged Archie tightly and buried his face in the dog’s fur. For the first time in weeks, Tommy finally smiled.

As the days passed, Tommy recovered, and it was all thanks to the hospital staff and his dog who prevented a possible tragedy.
Inspired by Archie’s bravery, the Chen family founded the Archie Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing therapy dogs to hospitals across the country. These dogs provide emotional support, comfort, and companionship to patients, helping them reduce stress and anxiety during difficult medical experiences.
Tommy’s story also prompted changes to hospital safety protocols, emphasizing the importance of monitoring medical staff to ensure patient well-being.
Years after his surgery, Tommy is a healthy young man who frequently visits hospitals with Archie. They bring hope and smiles to children facing medical challenges.
This story is yet another reminder that not all heroes wear capes; some of them have fur and a wagging tail.
