What do red spots on the skin mean and when should you see a doctor?
The skin is the largest organ in the human body and, at the same time, one of the most vulnerable. It is exposed daily to external aggressors: sun, pollution, stress, and inadequate skincare. Yet, many people underestimate the importance of proper skincare and fail to pay attention to the early warning signs.
Among these signs are redness, pimples, or rashes that can appear on different parts of the body. While some are completely benign, others can be a symptom of a more serious illness. This is why dermatologist Dr. Tatyana explains that it is crucial to distinguish between temporary redness and redness that indicates a deeper health problem.
🔹Dermatovirus diseases
This type of rash often occurs during viral infections such as dengue, Zika, or other tropical viruses. It is characterized by small reddish spots that spread rapidly on the skin and may be accompanied by fever, muscle pain, and fatigue.
➡️If you experience such symptoms, consult a doctor immediately, as only a doctor can determine if it is a viral infection and prescribe appropriate treatment.
🔹Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a chronic autoimmune skin disease characterized by whitish, scaly plaques, often accompanied by itching and inflammation. These plaques most commonly appear on the elbows, knees, scalp, and lower back.
Although the disease is not contagious, it requires regular monitoring and treatment, including medication, creams, phototherapy, and lifestyle modifications. Early diagnosis helps prevent the spread of the disease and complications.
🔹Allergic reactions
Allergies are one of the most common causes of skin redness. They can be caused by:
insect bites;
taking certain medications;
food (e.g., seafood, nuts or strawberries);
contact with cosmetics, detergents or plants.
An allergic rash is often accompanied by itching, swelling, or burning. To prevent a recurrence, it is important to determine the exact cause through allergy tests and a consultation with an allergist.
🔹Skin cancer
Not all red spots are harmless. In some cases, they can be an early sign of skin cancer, particularly melanoma, the most dangerous form.
Signs to watch for:
spots that change color or shape;
formations that do not heal over time;
areas of bleeding or peeling skin.
Early detection of skin cancer increases the chances of a complete cure. See a dermatologist at least once a year, especially if you have fair skin, many moles, or a family history of the disease
