Virginia's Molasses Cookies

Virginia’s Molasses Cookies – My grandmother, Virginia, was a culinary instructor until her passing at over 100 years. This recipe was one of her signatures and remains a family favorite four generations later. Hope they become one of your family’s favorites, too!

Ingredients

  • 3/4 c shortening, I use 1 stick margarine and 1/2 stick butter
  • 1 c sugar
  • 1/4 c heaping, molasses
  • 1 lg egg
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 1/4 c all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt

How to Make Virginia’s Molasses Cookies

  1. Cream together the shortening and sugar.
  2. Add the molasses and blend well.
  3. Add the egg and beat until the mixture is smooth.
  4. Sift together the flour, baking soda, salt, and spices.
  5. Mix the dry ingredients with the wet ingredients.
  6. Form the dough into 1-inch balls.
  7. Roll the balls in sugar.
  8. Flatten the balls slightly with the bottom of a juice glass dipped in sugar and place them 2 inches apart on a well-greased cookie sheet.

  10. Remove the cookies from the cookie sheet immediately and let them cool on toweling or wire racks.
