Granny’s Creamy Mashed Potatoes

There’s something special about a family recipe that warms both the heart and the table. Granny’s Creamy Mashed Potatoes are just that—a comforting, velvety side dish that steals the spotlight every time. This recipe has been passed down with love, and when my grandsons said, “Grandma, these are the best mashed potatoes ever!” I knew it was a keeper.

Perfect for holidays like Thanksgiving or any cozy dinner, these mashed potatoes are ultra-creamy thanks to a blend of butter, sour cream, and cream cheese. One bite and you’ll understand why they’ve become a family favorite.

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds Idaho potatoes

  • 1 cup water

  • ½ cup half & half

  • ⅓ cup cream cheese

  • 1 teaspoon pepper

  • 2 teaspoons seasoning salt

  • ½ cup sour cream

  • ½ stick butter

Instructions

1. Prepare the Potatoes
Peel and cut the potatoes into evenly sized chunks. Place them in a large pot with 1 cup of water and enough additional water to cover. Bring to a boil and cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 20–25 minutes.

2. Warm the Dairy
In a small saucepan, gently heat the half & half and butter together until the butter is melted and the mixture is warm. This step helps make the potatoes extra smooth and prevents them from cooling down too quickly.

3. Mash the Potatoes
Drain the cooked potatoes well. Using a food mill or potato ricer (or a hand masher if preferred), mash until smooth and lump-free.

4. Add the Good Stuff
Add the warm butter mixture, cream cheese, sour cream, seasoning salt, and pepper. Stir or beat with a hand mixer until creamy and fully blended. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.

5. Serve Warm
Transfer to a serving bowl, top with a small pat of butter, and serve immediately.

💛 Tip:
If you’re preparing these ahead for a big meal, keep them warm in a slow cooker on low heat, stirring occasionally. They’ll stay fluffy and creamy until it’s time to serve.
