Instructions:
1. Prepare the Dough:
Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar (or salt for savory), and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy and bubbly.
Mix the Dough: In a larger bowl, combine the flour and salt. Once the yeast mixture is activated, add it to the flour along with olive oil (or melted butter). Stir until it forms a dough.
Knead the Dough: Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, but be careful not to add too much.
2. Let the Dough Rise:
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours or until doubled in size.
3. Prepare the Filling:
Sweet Filling: If you’re making sweet fritters, mix the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl. Melt the butter or coconut oil and have it ready.
Savory Filling: For savory fritters, combine the cheese, dried herbs, and garlic powder in a small bowl. You can also add some sautéed onions or spinach for extra flavor.
4. Shape the Braided Fritters:
Roll the Dough: Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 4 equal portions. Roll each portion into a long strip, about 10-12 inches long.
Fill the Dough: For each strip, brush with a little melted butter (for sweet) or olive oil (for savory). Add your filling (sweet cinnamon sugar or savory cheese/herb mixture) along the center of each strip.
Braid the Dough: Carefully braid each strip of dough by crossing the two sides over the center, forming a beautiful braid. Pinch the ends together to seal them.
5. Preheat the Air Fryer:
Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for about 3-5 minutes, allowing it to reach the perfect temperature for even cooking.
6. Air Fry the Braided Fritters:
Egg Wash (Optional): If you want a golden, glossy finish, brush the top of each braided fritter with a beaten egg.
Place the braided fritters in the air fryer basket, making sure they’re not overcrowded. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook them in batches.
Air fry for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through for even crispiness. The fritters should be golden brown and cooked through.
7. Serve and Enjoy:
Once your fritters are golden brown and crispy, remove them from the air fryer and let them cool slightly before serving.
These fritters can be served warm as a snack or appetizer, perfect with a dipping sauce like honey, chocolate sauce, or a savory ranch dressing.
Tips for Success:
Dough Consistency: If the dough feels too sticky during kneading, add a little more flour, but don’t overdo it. A slightly sticky dough will result in a softer interior.
Air Fryer Size: Be sure not to overcrowd the air fryer basket. Give the fritters enough room to cook evenly and get crispy on all sides.
Flavor Variations: You can add a variety of sweet or savory fillings based on your preferences. For a twist, try adding chocolate chips or chopped nuts for a sweet version or cooked bacon for a savory treat.
