Instructions:
1. Prepare the Puff Pastry:
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Lay the puff pastry sheet flat on a clean surface, dusting lightly with flour to prevent sticking.
2. Brush with Butter:
Brush the entire surface of the pastry with the melted butter. This will help the sugar stick and create that flaky texture.
3. Sugar and Cinnamon:
Sprinkle the granulated sugar evenly over the buttered surface of the pastry. If you’re using cinnamon, mix it with the sugar and sprinkle this mixture over the pastry as well.
4. Form the Palmiers:
Start folding both edges of the puff pastry towards the center, so they meet in the middle. You want to create two long strips of folded pastry that meet at the center.
Then, fold the outer edges of the pastry towards the middle again. You should now have a long, rectangular shape.
Slice the pastry into about 1-inch wide pieces.
5. Bake:
Place the slices on the prepared baking sheet, spaced about 2 inches apart.
Bake for 12-15 minutes or until the palmiers are golden brown and crispy.
Be sure to flip the palmiers halfway through baking to ensure they brown evenly on both sides.
6. Cool and Serve:
Let the palmiers cool slightly before serving, as they’ll be very hot right out of the oven.
Tips:
Butter: Make sure to use unsalted butter to control the sweetness of the palmiers.
Variation: For a chocolate twist, you can add a thin layer of melted chocolate on the pastry before sprinkling with sugar, or even try adding a bit of orange zest for a citrus flavor.
Storage: Palmiers are best served fresh, but you can store them in an airtight container for a couple of days.
These buttery, crispy palmiers are perfect for a light dessert or snack! Enjoy!
