In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for about 5 minutes, or until frothy.
Add the melted butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until well combined.
Gradually add the flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for 5–7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Punch down the dough. It’s now ready to be shaped and used in your favorite recipes.
For savory dough: Reduce sugar to 2 tablespoons.
For sweeter recipes: Add an extra tablespoon of sugar.
For pizza: Roll thin after the first rise and pre-bake for 5 minutes before topping.
For rolls: Shape, let rise again for 20–30 minutes, then bake.
