Instructions:
1. Activate the Yeast:
In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and stir gently. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This step ensures the yeast is active and ready to help your buns rise.

2. Make the Dough:
In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the frothy yeast mixture, along with the milk, melted butter, and egg.

Mix with a spoon or a dough hook attachment on a stand mixer until a sticky dough forms. If you’re using a stand mixer, knead on medium speed for about 6-8 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. If kneading by hand, turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes.

3. Let the Dough Rise:
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, covering it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

4. Shape the Buns:
Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Turn it out onto a floured surface and divide it into 8 equal portions.

Shape each portion into a smooth ball by folding the dough edges underneath and pinching them together. Place each ball onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, leaving space between them.

Gently flatten each dough ball with your palm to form a round bun shape (about 3-4 inches in diameter).

5. Second Rise:
Cover the buns with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let them rise again for about 30-45 minutes, until they are puffed up and slightly touching each other.

6. Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

7. Bake the Buns:
Once the buns have risen, you can optionally brush the tops with a little melted butter and sprinkle with sesame seeds for a classic look.

Bake the buns for 15-18 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.

8. Cool and Serve:
Remove the buns from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack.

Slice them in half once they have cooled, and use them to build your perfect homemade burgers!
