Hospice Chef Reveals the One Comfort Food Most People Ask For Before They Die

At Sobell House Hospice in Oxfordshire, chef Spencer Richards does more than cook—he brings comfort, joy, and dignity to people in their final days through the power of food.

For Richards, preparing meals for the terminally ill isn’t just a job—it’s a calling.

“My own philosophy is that there can be no greater privilege as a chef than serving someone their final meal,” he told The Mirror. “Recently, a 21-year-old patient didn’t connect with anything on the standard menu. He was young and liked street food—so we made that happen.”

Richards often tailors dishes based on individual tastes and emotional needs, sometimes going well beyond standard menus to bring joy during a deeply vulnerable time.

He recalls making a birthday cake for a 93-year-old woman who had never celebrated her birthday due to her upbringing in a traditional home.

“When we surprised her with one, she was in tears. She was absolutely over the moon.”
