Air Fryer Apple Fries are a fun, crispy, and sweet treat that combines the crunch of fries with the natural sweetness of apples. Coated in cinnamon sugar, they make a perfect dessert, snack, or party finger food—ready in just minutes.

Ingredients

  • 2 large apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Pink Lady)
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • Cooking spray or light oil mist

Optional: caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, or whipped cream for dipping

How To Make Air Fryer Apple Fries

  1. Prep apples: Peel (optional), core, and slice into fry-shaped sticks. Pat dry with paper towels.
  2. Set up coating station:
    • Bowl 1: flour
    • Bowl 2: beaten egg
    • Bowl 3: panko breadcrumbs mixed with cinnamon and sugar
  3. Coat apple slices: Dredge in flour, dip in egg, then coat with cinnamon-sugar breadcrumbs.
  4. Arrange in basket: Place coated apple fries in a single layer. Lightly spray with oil.
  5. Cook: Air fry at 190°C (375°F) for 6–8 minutes until golden and crispy.
  6. Serve warm with your favourite dipping sauce.

You Must Know

  • Drying the apple slices is important so the coating sticks.
  • Panko breadcrumbs give the crispiest texture—regular breadcrumbs work too.
  • Sweet-tart apples (like Granny Smith) balance the coating’s sweetness best.

Topping Variations

  • Caramel Apple Fries: Drizzle with caramel sauce.
  • Chocolate Apple Fries: Dip in melted chocolate or Nutella.
  • Apple Pie Style: Add nutmeg and allspice to the coating.
  • Healthier Option: Skip the breadcrumbs and lightly dust apple slices with cinnamon sugar before air frying.

Make It A Meal

  • Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a quick dessert.
  • Pair with pancakes or waffles at brunch.
  • Enjoy alongside a cup of hot chocolate or coffee for a cosy snack.
  • Serve as a fun party platter with multiple dipping sauces.

Pro Tips

  • Don’t overcrowd the basket—cook in batches for even crisping.
  • Cut apples into even sticks so they cook at the same rate.
  • For extra crunch, spray a light coat of oil halfway through cooking.
  • Best served fresh—apple fries lose crispiness if stored too long.

Recipe FAQs

Q: Can I use any apple variety?

A: Store in the fridge for up to 2 days, reheat in the air fryer at 180°C (350°F) for 3–4 minutes.

Q: Can I make these gluten-free?

Instructions

  1. Use an apple peeler to peel the skins off each apple. Cut apples in half, then into ½ inch wedges.
  2. Whisk together the flour, apple pie spice and 4 Tablespoons of cinnamon in a medium bowl.
  3. Transfer the flour mixture into a large bowl or container with a lid then add in the apple wedges.
  4. Place the lid on the container then shake vigorously to coat all sides of the apples.
  5. Use a large slotted spoon to remove the apple wedges from the container. Shake off the excess flour mixture and place the wedges on a plate to prepare them for dredging. Don’t get rid of the flour mixture in the container, we’ll use it again in a minute .
  6. In a separate mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs and vanilla extract.
  7. Dredge a few apples at a time into the egg mixture.
  8. Return the wedges to the excess flour mixture in the container and shake them all again to create a second coating.
  9. In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and remaining 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, set aside.
  10. Spray the air fryer basket with olive oil nonstick spray then add the coated apple fries to the air fryer basket in a single layer (you will need to make these in two batches).
  11. Liberally spray the top facing apples with olive oil spray then sprinkle half of the brown sugar/cinnamon coating on top of each apple then cook for 6 minutes at 350F degrees.
  12. Open the basket, flip the apples, spray then with nonstick spray and sprinkle with the rest of the cinnamon sugar mixture and cook for an additional 6 minutes.
  13. Serve with caramel sauce or a simple powdered sugar glaze, if desired.

Notes

  • Olive oil nonstick spray is best for air fryer baskets as it doesn’t “gunk” up the basket and leave a residue over time.
  • Serve with caramel or a homemade powdered sugar sauce.
  • Cooking times vary from what air fryer you use. See above on how I address that.
  • A variety of apples can be used, we use Honeycrisp, but other suggestions are listed above.
