Ingredients
For the Patties:
1 lb (450 g) ground beef or lamb
2 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp smoked paprika
1/2 tsp garlic powder
Salt and black pepper to taste
For the Caramelized Onions:
2 large yellow onions, cut into thick rings
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp balsamic vinegar
A pinch of salt
For Assembly:
Slices of your favorite cheese (feta, provolone, or mozzarella work beautifully)
A handful of arugula or lettuce
Optional: a drizzle of tahini sauce or garlic yogurt sauce
Instructions
Prepare the Onions
Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add the onion rings and cook slowly until golden brown and caramelized — about 10–12 minutes. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar and sprinkle with salt. Set aside.
Make the Patties
In a bowl, mix the ground meat with cumin, oregano, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Form into thick patties.
Cook the Patties
Heat a grill pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Drizzle with olive oil and cook the patties for about 4–5 minutes on each side, depending on thickness. Add cheese slices on top during the last minute to let them melt slightly.
Assemble the Stack
On a plate, place a few arugula leaves, then a layer of caramelized onion rings. Add the burger patty with melted cheese, then another layer of onions on top.
Serve
Serve warm as a bunless burger stack — juicy, flavorful, and rich with Mediterranean spices.
Serving Tip
Pair this dish with roasted sweet potatoes, grilled vegetables, or a side of Greek salad. For a creamy touch, drizzle with a little tahini or garlic yogurt sauce right before serving.
