Why Does an Egg Yolk Look Dark or Metallic?

Sometimes when cooking eggs – especially farm-raised or free-range eggs – you may notice that one of the yolks looks unusual, with a dark or metallic color instead of the typical bright yellow or orange.

Possible Reasons for a Strange Yolk Color:

1. Blood Spot:
A small bleed inside the hen’s reproductive tract can cause dark discoloration or spots in the yolk.

2. Oxidation or Early Spoilage:
If the egg was not stored properly, some of its components may oxidize, leading to an unusual color.

3. Diet or Environmental Factors:
A hen’s feed or mineral-rich water can sometimes alter yolk color.

4. Old Egg:
As eggs age, the yolk and white lose their normal texture and color, sometimes appearing darker.

Is the Egg Safe to Eat?

If the egg gives off a bad or sulfur-like odor, it is spoiled and should be discarded immediately.

If the smell is fine but the yolk color looks abnormal, it’s best not to take the risk.
