Tired of buying bananas only to find them soft, black, and spoiled just a few days later? With this surprising and highly effective preservation method, you can extend their shelf life up to two full years—eliminating waste and keeping your favorite fruit ready whenever you need it.
Why Bananas Spoil So Quickly
Bananas are naturally rich in sugars and enzymes that cause them to ripen—and rot—very quickly, especially in warm environments. While delicious and versatile in smoothies, desserts, or eaten as-is, their short shelf life often leads to frustration. Fortunately, this preservation trick will change the way you store bananas forever.
How to Preserve Bananas for Up to 2 Years
Follow these detailed steps to turn fresh bananas into a long-lasting pantry item:
Step 1: Clean the Bananas
Start with the desired number of ripe—but firm—bananas.
-
Gently scrub the banana peels using a toothbrush and a pinch of baking soda.
-
Rinse thoroughly under running water.
-
Pat the bananas completely dry with paper towels.
Step 2: Slice and Prepare for Jar Storage
-
Trim both ends of the bananas (do not peel them).
-
Slice the bananas into pieces about two fingers thick.
-
Prepare clean glass jars (700 ml capacity recommended).
Step 3: Add Flavorful Preserving Ingredients
Into each jar, layer the following:
-
1 bay leaf
-
2 cloves of garlic (or 2 whole cloves)
-
2 slices of chili pepper
-
1 teaspoon coriander seeds
-
1 teaspoon dill seeds
-
A mix of white, black, green, pink peppercorns, and allspice
-
About a dozen banana slices per jar
Top with a few additional chili slices for extra flavor.
Step 4: Add the Preservation Liquid
Into each jar, add:
-
1 teaspoon sugar
-
1½ teaspoons salt
-
1 teaspoon 70% vinegar
-
Pour in hot water to fill the jar
