I switched my ceiling fans to run counterclockwise on the lowest setting while my AC was on for 2 weeks this July.

I tried medium speed for one evening in the living room, and while it did increase the cooling sensation, it was more than we needed. It also created a faint draft that made the room feel less relaxed and a bit noisier. Low speed was the better compromise: just enough movement to help, not enough to become the main thing you noticed.

That matters if you’re trying to keep fans running for long stretches. A low-speed fan is easy to live with for 8 to 14 hours a day. It doesn’t tug at curtains, it doesn’t dry out my eyes when I’m reading, and it doesn’t compete with conversation or the television. For us, comfort won over brute force.

6. The rooms felt cooler, but the thermometer barely budged

This was the most important lesson of the whole test. In the living room, the wall thermostat still read 74°F most afternoons because that’s what the AC was set to maintain. The fan did not magically make that number become 71°F. But sitting in the room felt more like 72°F than 74°F, especially if I’d just come in from outside.

That difference between measured temperature and perceived comfort is where ceiling fans earn their keep. If you’re expecting a dramatic drop on a digital display, you’ll probably be disappointed. If you care about how your body experiences the room, the result is much more convincing.

7. Humidity still mattered more than I wanted it to

On the muggiest days, when indoor relative humidity hovered around 54% to 58%, the fan helped but didn’t fully solve that sticky feeling. Air movement can make humid air more tolerable, but it can’t dehumidify. The AC was still doing the real moisture-removal work.

On drier days, with indoor humidity closer to 47% to 50%, the exact same fan setting felt noticeably better. That told me the fan-and-AC combo works best when your air conditioner is already controlling moisture reasonably well. If your house feels clammy, the answer probably isn’t “more fan.” It’s checking the HVAC system, filtration, drainage, or overall dehumidification.

8. I was comfortable raising the thermostat slightly in some rooms

By the end of the first week, I tested a small thermostat adjustment during the day: from 74°F to 75°F for two afternoons. With the fans running low, I honestly didn’t mind it in the living room or bedroom. That one-degree bump might not sound like much, but over a long cooling season it can matter.

I wouldn’t have tried 76°F during a 95°F day in full sun, at least not in my house. But 75°F with gentle air movement felt acceptable, and sometimes genuinely comfortable. If someone’s looking for a practical energy-saving move, that’s where I’d focus: use the fans to support a modest thermostat increase rather than expecting the fans alone to do all the work.

9. My electricity use changed, but not in a dramatic way

After 14 days, I compared usage against the previous two-week stretch with similar heat. The result was a small reduction, not a jaw-dropping one. Based on the utility app’s daily figures, our usage dropped by roughly 4% to 7%, though weather and household activity always add some noise to that number.

That lines up with what I’d expect. Ceiling fans use electricity too, but most modern models on low speed draw far less power than central AC. A typical fan on low may use somewhere around 10 to 25 watts depending on motor type and blade size, while a central air system uses vastly more when the compressor is running. If the fan lets you nudge the thermostat up by 1°F, that’s where savings become realistic.

10. Sleep improved more than daytime lounging did
