“What?”
His expression never changed.
“This isn’t how I wanted to do this,” he said. “But I couldn’t wait any longer.”
My mother finally found her voice.
“No,” she snapped. “You don’t get to do this. Not today.”
I looked at her.
Then at him.
Then back at her.
My heart was pounding so hard I could hear it.
“What is happening?”
The man’s eyes filled with sadness.
“Your mother told me you never made it,” he said softly. “She told me she lost the baby.”
The world seemed to stop moving.
I stared at him.
Then at my mother.
