Method
Bake the pie crust according to the package or recipe instructions and allow it to cool completely.
In a medium saucepan, whisk together the sugar, flour, cocoa powder, and salt.
Gradually whisk in the milk until the mixture is smooth.
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens.
Lightly beat the egg yolks in a separate bowl. Slowly add a small amount of the hot chocolate mixture to the yolks while whisking continuously.
Pour the tempered egg mixture back into the saucepan and cook for 2 to 3 more minutes, stirring constantly.
Remove from the heat and stir in the butter and vanilla extract until fully melted and smooth.
Pour the chocolate filling into the cooled pie crust.
Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or until fully set.
Slice and serve chilled with whipped cream if desired.
