When the mother expressed her wish to see her two babies, Karine knew she had to allow this family to say goodbye. With infinite gentleness, she took Renée in her arms and softly placed her in the incubator, right next to Lucie. She whispered a few words, almost instinctively. As Lucie stirred slightly, her tiny hand slowly reached out until it touched her sister’s. This barely perceptible contact was followed by an unexpected sound: a beep on the heart monitor, then a second.
Karine, incredulous, stared at the screen. A faint but undeniable heartbeat had just appeared. She immediately alerted the doctor, and the team rushed over. After checking, Renée’s vital signs were indeed present. No one could explain this phenomenon at the time; some suggested an extremely weak pulse that might have gone undetected initially. But for Karine, the image of those two little hands meeting would remain forever etched in her memory.
The following weeks were spent in intensive care. Lucie and Renée progressed slowly, each gram gained and each more stable breath celebrated as a victory. Throughout the hospital, they were affectionately known as “the miracle twins.” Karine often took the time to visit them after her shift, and almost every time, the two babies ended up holding hands in their incubator.
Three years later, Karine received a special invitation to Lucie and Renée’s birthday party. In the house decorated with balloons, the two little girls ran hand in hand, inseparable. Their father, Didier, raised his glass to thank the nurse who had shown such compassion that night. But Karine simply replied that she had followed her instinct. Because sometimes, in life’s most delicate moments, a simple gesture can bring about an unexpected medical miracle. And in this story, it all began with the touch of a little hand that never wanted to let go of the other.
