I sat there on the bathroom floor for ten seconds after the door shut.
Then I got up.
Because getting up was all I had.
The cocktail hour was worse.
Kevin, Brandon’s best man, mistook me for catering staff loud enough for his friends to hear. When I said I was the bride’s sister, they laughed harder. One of them actually said, “No way,” with the delighted disbelief of a man discovering gossip in three dimensions.

I do not remember deciding to say her name.
I just remember it leaving me like a wound.
“Jessica—”
And then the slap.
And then security.
And then the front entrance with glass walls and half the wedding party watching as I was hauled toward public removal.
And then the text I sent Benjamin with hands that would not stop shaking.
I can’t do this anymore.
They hate me.
I am so tired.
The security guards were opening the main doors when the cars pulled up.
