A quick, nostalgic American comfort-food recipe made with smoky hot dogs and sweet, savory baked beans. Perfect for an easy lunch or casual family dinner.

Ingredients

  • 8 hot dogs
  • 1 can (28 oz / 794 g) baked beans
  • 8 hot dog buns
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon barbecue sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Prepare the hot dogs:
Cut the hot dogs into thick slices, leaving a few larger pieces if you want the look shown in the photo.

2. Brown them:
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the hot dogs and cook for about 4–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned.

3. Add the onion:
Add the chopped onion and cook for another 2–3 minutes until softened.

4. Make the beans:
Pour in the baked beans. Add brown sugar, mustard, ketchup, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and smoked paprika.

5. Simmer:
Stir everything together and reduce the heat to low. Simmer uncovered for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce becomes thick and glossy.

6. Assemble:
Warm or lightly toast the hot dog buns. Place some sliced hot dogs in each bun and generously spoon the saucy beans over them.

Serving Ideas

Serve immediately while warm. They go especially well with coleslaw, potato salad, French fries, pickles, or corn on the cob.
