However, anyone who’s boiled eggs is familiar with the sulfuric smell that can linger in the kitchen afterward. Recently, I came across an unusual tip online: adding a burnt matchstick to the boiling water. Intrigued by this peculiar method, I decided to give it a try. With a box of matches in hand, I set out to discover whether this trick could truly make a difference in my egg-boiling routine.

1. Why I Put a Burnt Matchstick In My Egg Water

The idea of adding a burnt matchstick to boiling water seems strange at first. However, the logic behind this method is rooted in chemistry. The matchstick, once ignited and extinguished, leaves behind charred wood, primarily composed of carbon. This carbon is believed to interact with the sulfur compounds released by the eggs during boiling, potentially neutralizing the odor.
According to some sources, the burnt matchstick absorbs or masks the sulfur smell, making the kitchen environment more pleasant. Curious about this claim, I decided to conduct my own experiment using a single burnt matchstick for every six eggs in a medium-sized pot filled with water.
