How to Make Southern Baked Beans

Step 1: Cook the Bacon

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Cook chopped bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crispy.

Remove bacon and set aside, leaving a little bacon grease in the pan.

Step 2: Cook the Onion

Add diced onion to the skillet and cook until softened.

Step 3: Mix the Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl or baking dish, combine pork and beans, cooked onion, brown sugar, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, molasses, garlic powder, black pepper, and half of the bacon.

Stir until fully combined.

Step 4: Bake

Transfer the mixture to a casserole dish if needed.

Top with the remaining bacon.

Bake uncovered for 45–60 minutes until thick, bubbly, and caramelized on top.

Step 5: Serve

Allow the baked beans to rest for a few minutes before serving.

Serve warm.

Recipe Tips

  • Bake uncovered for thick rich sauce.
  • Use thick-cut bacon for extra smoky flavor.
  • Stir halfway through baking if desired.
  • Let the beans rest before serving for thicker consistency.
