I’ll admit it: I’m exactly the kind of person who notices the dishwasher at 9:47 p.m., standing in the kitchen in socks, wondering whether I really need a hot drying cycle blasting away for the next half hour. This July, during one of those sticky, high-humidity stretches when every appliance seems to throw extra heat into the house, I decided to test a small habit change for 14 days straight: I turned heated dry off on every load, then opened the dishwasher door as soon as the cycle finished and propped it ajar.

I didn’t go into it expecting a life-changing revelation. I wanted to know four practical things: whether the dishes would actually dry, whether I’d save any noticeable energy, whether plastic containers would still come out damp, and whether opening the door right away would make the machine smell fresher or just leave me with a wet kitchen floor. After two weeks, 13 full loads, and more coffee mugs, lunch boxes, and pasta bowls than I care to count, I came away with a much clearer picture of when this trick works brilliantly and when it needs a little backup.

1. Why I tried it in the first place

My dishwasher has a standard heated dry option that adds roughly 25 to 40 minutes to the end of a normal cycle, depending on the program. In July, that extra heat felt unnecessary. My kitchen already sat between 74°F and 79°F most afternoons, and on humid days the air conditioner was running enough without me adding another hot appliance cycle.

I was also curious about the energy side. Heated dry is convenient, but it’s one of the least essential parts of the wash if your dishes are already clean. I’ve read enough utility breakdowns over the years to know that dishwashers are generally efficient, but resistance heat is still resistance heat. If I could skip it and still get usable results, it seemed like low-effort savings.

2. Exactly how I ran the 14-day test

I kept the method as consistent as I could. For 14 days, I ran every load with the heated dry setting turned off. As soon as I heard the end-of-cycle chime, I opened the door about 4 to 6 inches. If I was in another room and didn’t catch it instantly, I opened it within 10 minutes. I used the same detergent pac I normally use, loaded the machine the same way I usually do, and didn’t towel-dry anything unless I was noting a problem.

Over the two weeks, I ran 13 loads. Most were normal daily loads for a two-adult household: plates, cereal bowls, coffee mugs, water glasses, stainless steel utensils, a few glass food-storage containers, and plenty of plastic lids. I ran 9 normal cycles, 3 eco cycles, and 1 heavy cycle after a lasagna night. Cycle length ranged from 2 hours 18 minutes on eco to just over 3 hours on heavy.

3. The first thing I noticed: the kitchen stayed cooler

This was the most immediate and surprisingly satisfying change. Without the heated dry, the dishwasher finished warm but not like a little space heater under the counter. Opening the door released steam, yes, but it was a short burst instead of a prolonged heat dump from a drying element running for another half hour.

My kitchen isn’t huge, so I notice appliance heat fast. On days when I ran the dishwasher after dinner, the room felt less stuffy afterward. I can’t assign an exact degree drop without lab equipment, but subjectively it was enough that I mentioned it out loud more than once. In July, that matters.

4. Most dishes dried better than I expected

Ceramic plates, stoneware bowls, glass cups, and stainless steel cutlery did very well. If I opened the door promptly and left the racks untouched for 20 to 30 minutes, most of those items came out 95% to 100% dry. Dinner plates were consistently dry by the time I unloaded. Glasses usually had no visible droplets. Forks and spoons were ready to put away.

The key seemed to be residual heat. The wash water had already heated the dishes, and once the door was open, that trapped steam had somewhere to go. Instead of condensing back onto everything, it vented upward and out. That made a bigger difference than I expected, especially compared with leaving the machine shut after the cycle ended.

5. Plastic was still the troublemaker
