At first, I convinced myself it was nothing.
We lived in a quiet neighborhood outside San Antonio—one of those places where everything looks calm from the outside. Neighbors wave politely. Life seems predictable.
I wanted that life.
After everything I’d been through, I needed to believe I had finally built something stable.
A home. A family.
My daughter Emily was five. Soft curls, gentle eyes, the kind of child teachers describe as “too sweet for this world.” Sensitive. Careful. Easily hurt.
And then there was Ryan.
My husband.
He had stepped into our lives like an answer to a prayer—calm, patient, always willing to help.
“I’ll take care of bath time,” he’d said early on. “Kids relax more when they feel safe.”
At the time, I felt lucky.
Working long hours, barely getting by, I thought I had finally found support.
