Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Preheat and Prepare
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch glass baking dish.
Step 2: Arrange the Chicken
Pat the chicken breasts dry and arrange them in a single layer in the baking dish.
Step 3: Add the Soup
Pour the French onion soup evenly over and around the chicken.
Step 4: Cover and Bake
Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the chicken is mostly cooked through.
Step 5: Add the Cheese and Onions
Carefully remove the foil. Lay the provolone slices over the chicken. Sprinkle the crispy fried onions evenly over the top.
Step 6: Finish Baking
Return the uncovered dish to the oven and bake for another 10 to 15 minutes, until the cheese is melted and the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C).
Step 7: Rest and Serve
Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving. Spoon some of the sauce from the bottom over each piece.
How to Serve French Onion Chicken
This cheesy, savory chicken is delicious on its own, but the right sides make it a complete meal.
Over Mashed Potatoes: The sauce is perfect over creamy potatoes.
With Egg Noodles: Wide egg noodles catch the sauce.
With Rice: White rice or jasmine rice absorbs the sauce.
With Roasted Vegetables: Serve with green beans or broccoli.
With a Green Salad: A simple salad cuts through the richness.
