Camphor becomes unsafe when swallowed, inhaled in large amounts, or applied excessively to the skin. Even small quantities taken by mouth can cause poisoning.
WHO IS MOST AT RISK
Children are at the highest risk. They may accidentally swallow camphor tablets or oil at home, and because of their small body size, toxic effects can occur quickly and become severe.
SIGNS OF CAMPHOR POISONING
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, a burning sensation in the mouth or stomach, dizziness, confusion, rapid heartbeat, breathing difficulty, and in severe cases, seizures.
SKIN AND BREATHING EFFECTS
Applying too much camphor can cause skin irritation, redness, or even burns. Inhaling strong fumes for prolonged periods may irritate the airways and trigger breathing problems.
